The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Comeback
At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to remain there for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Finding His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
