England and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
